Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services says on Friday just before 6pm, firefighters responded to the blaze at 58 Bedford St.
Fire officials say the blaze was extinguished quickly and there was no damage to any of the surrounding structures.
The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
SPS Board Chair Kelly Ash said the decision followed discussions with Acting Chief Mike Federico and aligns with practices at other police services.
