School Closures On Horizon

Big changes are on the horizon for some Chatham-Kent area public schools.

Nothing is planned for this school year, but the Lambton-Kent District School Board is considering accommodation reviews that could see school closures in Dresden, Blenheim, Ridgetown and Chatham.

"Given the challenges we're facing around enrollment and the drop of funding we're going to be receiving as a result of that we've had to make a number of recommendations. There are eight phases of accommodation reviews that we'd like to see," says Director of Education Jim Costello.

He says there are no set timelines for any review process but the phases set out a roadmap for the next five to six years.

In both the Blenheim-Ridgetown area and the Dresden area, the board is considering the kindergarten to Grade 12 model. To read the full report click here.

An education expert has said school closures are unavoidable, something school boards couldn't have predicted.
