Fire Destroys Donation Bin Contents

A donation bin at the Salvation Army location in Wallaceburg has been destroyed by fire.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the store at 600 Lowe Ave. around 7:30am today, and put out the fire before it could spread to the building.

Captain Stephanie Watkinson says she's disheartened someone would destroy donations, especially the day before Christmas.

"I think people are not realizing the fact that those donations go a long way," says Watkinson. "Because not only are they going to the store to sell at a reasonable price, but the proceeds from thrift stores support our family services programs, which is our food and our housing and all of those other programs, so it's going to have a long reaching affect." She says the bin was fairly full at the time and everything inside now has to be taken to the dump.

Watkinson is asking anyone who wished to make a donation to wait until Monday when the store reopens.
