Former Manitoba Premier And UofW Professor Dies

Howard Pawley, Manitoba’s second NDP premier and a professor at the University of Windsor, has died at the age of 81.

Current Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger confirmed Pawley's death on Twitter, saying Manitoba had lost a true champion for social justice.

Pawley was the 18th premier of Manitoba from 1981 to 1988. After retiring from politics, he became a professor at the University of Windsor in 1991, and remained an associate professor emeritus until his death.

In 2000, he was awarded the Order of Manitoba and in 2001 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Pawley passed away on Wednesday.
