New Year's Day Assault

A Charing Cross resident rang in the New Year by landing himself in jail.

Chatham-Kent police say early New Year's Day, a couple got into an argument over the location of a kitchen knife. Police add the couple had been broken up since mid-2015, but were still staying at the same residence.

Officials allege when the suspect obtained the knife, he began slashing the footboard of the couple's bed, and later threw it above the headboard.

A scuffle ensued when the woman tried to call police. After allegedly being hit in the face, the woman found another phone and called police from her car.

A 36-year-old Charing Cross man has now been charged with possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault with a weapon and assault. He was held for a bail hearing.
