Winter Natural Gas Safety

With snow and ice conditions again in parts of its service area Union Gas is reminding its customers of a couple of safety tips.

Company spokesperson Andrea Stass says there are a couple of safety issues around metres and vents.

"The metre actually sets the pressure of the natural gas as it enters your home, so if it is covered with ice and snow that can impede the function or regulating the pressure and that can be a safety issue," she says. "The vents actually vent carbon monoxide out of your home so if they are plugged up that can create a potential build up of carbon monoxide in your home."

As well she says if you haven't already done so get the furnace tuned up both for safety and for maximum fuel efficiency.

Stass also reminds people that carbon monoxide detectors are required on every floor with a bedroom.
