Stable Fire Will Impact Horse Racing Industry

A fire that killed more than 40 racehorses in the Guelph area will have an impact on racing across Southwestern Ontario.

Lucille Laprise is President of the Dresden Agricultural Society, which operates Dresden Raceway. She says the tragedy could draw trainers and their horses to the the Guelph area this summer, to fill a need.

"Whenever there's an opening for the horses to race it's a possibility," says Laprise. "It's hard to say if they would venture to go that far, I think it's going to be something that everybody is certainly going to be thinking about."

Fire officials estimate 43 horses were killed in the blaze at Classy Lane Stables Training Centre late last night, which is still under investigation.

The owner says all of the horses are standardbreds owned by trainers who race them at the Mohawk, Woodbine, and Flamboro Downs racetracks.
