Photographer Climbed Crane Five Times

A Sarnia photographer who took several of photos from the top of a Chatham construction site, says he climbed the construction crane a number of times and has done similar things in the past.

Dylan Johnson says he was in Chatham briefly looking after his father's dog, and when he saw the crane at the downtown condo project the first thing he thought of was cityscape photos.

"Honestly it was just breath-taking, this is my first time ever doing night photography, so I was up there the first night for hours trying to perfect that photo," he says. "I was probably up there a good five times, five separate nights."

Response to the pictures has been mixed with many, including Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope, saying they look good but condemning the trespassing.

Johnson says he has climbed buildings before but wouldn't recommend it to anyone "that has no previous skill in roof topping or crane topping."

He also says he is unemployed, is fairly new to photography, and hasn't had any luck approaching building owners for permission to take pictures professionally.
