Educational Workers Picket For Improved Work Conditions

Local CUPE 1238 is pushing for improved working conditions during its bargaining talks with the Lambton Kent District School Board.

An information picket and rally was held outside the school board's Sarnia office on Wellington St. Tuesday afternoon.

CUPE National Representative Brian Humphrey says management has repeatedly refused to discuss outstanding issues at the bargaining table, including health and safety, violence in the workplace, contracting in/out, and medical procedures.

He says the changes they're asking for are already offered to other school workers in the board.

"On February 29th, if we don't have an agreement in place, we've given them notice that we're going to put a phase 2 work-to-rule campaign in place," he says.

"If by March the 22nd we still don't have a local agreement in place, then we're going to have a withdrawal of our services."

The groups meet again at the bargaining table 9am Wednesday.

OSSTF and ETFO have local agreements in place.
