Windsor Jail Gets More Correctional Officers

The South West Detention Centre (SWDC) is getting 26 additional correctional officers on Monday.

OPSEU Local 135 President Randy Simpraga says the new hires, who are all recent graduates, brings their staffing levels up to a full compliment.

Simpraga says they'll now be able to offer more supervised programs like narcotics anonymous, anger management, and life skill courses such as family budgeting and parenting. He expects the new hires to be fully trained in about four weeks.

The SWDC can hold up to 315 inmates and employs roughly 300 staff members, including correctional officers, health care positions, administrative staff, maintenance and food service workers.

Simpraga says for security reasons he can't specify exactly how many correctional officers they'll now have in the facility.
