Man Killed In Belmont-Area Crash

Provincial police are looking into whether fog was a factor in a fatal crash involving a transport truck near Belmont.

Elgin OPP say a Jeep was heading north on Belmont Rd. around 6:45am Friday when it clipped a tractor-trailer that was turning onto the roadway from Yorke Line.

Elgin OPP Constable Troy Carlson says the Jeep rolled onto its driver's side, coming to rest in the southbound lane.

"There were several other vehicles coming southbound on Belmont Rd. One vehicle swerved to avoid the vehicle on its side. A pick-up truck behind that vehicle collided with the vehicle that had rolled onto its side," says Carlson.

The driver of the Jeep, a 38-year-old Aylmer man, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male driver of the pick-up was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Police are withholding the name of the deceased driver until family are notified.

Belmont Rd. between Wilson Line and Borden Ave. is closed as the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Police hope to have it re-opened by early afternoon.
