Construction Affecting Emergency Crews

Now that the bridge on Keil Dr. in Chatham is closed for the summer, fire officials are asking drivers to watch out for emergency vehicles along the detour routes.

Assistant Fire Chief Bob Davidson says first of all, they're asking motorists to move out of their way if it's possible.

"That emergency some day could be your own emergency," says Davidson. "So we're asking the public to pull over to the right and stop whenever they hear police, fire, or an ambulance responding... respect that they're trying to get to the emergency and they're trying to help people."

Davidson says they'll also be keeping a close eye on whether the detour and heavier traffic affects their response times.

"There may be delays," says Davidson. "If we find that as a result of the construction that we're impeded from responding to emergencies in a timely manner, then we'll have to come up with alternative plans in terms of our routing."

The primary detour for the closure on Keil Dr. in Chatham is the Lacroix St. bridge, but there are other routes in place as well.
