Chatham-Kent Council has some decisions to make regarding the short-term and long-term future of its emergency services strategy.
Staff are recommending the municipality's EMS contract with third-party company Medavie be extended for another two years. The current contract is set to expire at the end of 2016.
Beyond 2018, CK fire officials are hoping for a change. They're recommending Chatham-Kent enters negotiations for a new blended fire and EMS service model. It would see full-time employees cross-trained as both paramedics and firefighters.
Paramedic and union officials have vocally opposed a blended model, holding a public demonstration in Chatham-Kent.
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has said the province is currently in talks with stakeholders regarding a proposal to allow firefighters to serve paramedic duties with minimum training.
The vote tonight doesn't guarantee the blended model will come into effect beyond 2018; it simply allows administration to enter into negotiations with stakeholders.
Staff continue to analyze the future capitol costs involved with a blended service. Administration would also need to apply for an ambulance license if council goes forward with the recommended model.
Council will discuss the viability of blended model negotiations at their Monday night meeting.
