Accused In Supermarket Assault Receiving Mental Health Treatment

A woman accused of assaulting a Muslim woman at a Westmount-area grocery store is in hospital for mental health treatment.

The 38-year-old woman was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, but the court was instead told the woman was in hospital undergoing mental health treatment.

The woman was charged with one count of assault in relation to the June 20 attack on a Muslim woman at the Superking Supermarket on Wonderland Rd. S.

The Muslim woman suffered minor injuries in the attack in which police sat she was yelled at, punched and spit on by another woman. The Muslim woman, who was shopping with her 4-month-old son at the time, also had her hijab and hair pulled.

Police were unable to find a motive for the attack that they described at the time as unprovoked.

The woman's next court appearance is scheduled for August 4.
