Local Fans Cheer On Masse

Essex County residents erupted at John Max sports bar as LaSalle swimmer Kylie Masse won the bronze medal in the 100m backstroke.

Masse finished in a tie for third with a Canadian record time of 58.76 seconds.

Former coach Lou Pocock with the Windsor-Essex Swim Team says Masse always had drive.

"She worked hard, she had a good attitude, that's very important, just go out and do the job that you're supposed to do and you're going to get better. To me that's the epitome of what athletes are like, what she has done," says Pocock.

Pocock expects the local win to bolster interest in the local swim teams.

"Usually when you have an Olympic year whether it's this one or not you usually get an influx of people coming in and their kind of inspired by what they've seen and with this one I think it's going to be even more," says Pocock .

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu won gold in 58.45 seconds, Kathleen Baker of the United States took silver in 58.75 and Chinese swimmer Fu Yunahui tied with Masse to win a second bronze medal.
