UPDATE: Police Incorrectly Report Hwy. 40 Crash As Fatal (GALLERY)

A serious two-vehicle collision on Hwy. 40 remains under investigation, after police incorrectly reported that a driver had died as a result of the crash.

The Ontario Provincial Police say a head-on collision between a minivan and a Chatham-Kent EMS ambulance occurred just north of Chatham at Green Valley Line on Friday around 10:30am.

The driver and lone occupant of the minivan, 60-year-old Geoffrey Brereton of Chatham, was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries, where he remains in critical condition as of Friday night. The OPP released information late Friday afternoon that stated he had succumbed to his injuries, however, police officials now say that information was incorrect.

EMS in Chatham-Kent say two paramedics in the ambulance were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They have since been discharged from hospital. There was no patient in the ambulance at the time of the crash.

Hwy. 40 between Dover Centre Line and Bush Line reopened around 3:30pm. There has been no word on if any charges will be laid.
