Greenhouse Company Buys Property In Blenheim For $80K

Plans are being drawn up as Voorwinden Greenhouse Buildings Inc. gets ready to set up shop in Blenheim.

That's because the municipality of Chatham-Kent has approved the company's offer to purchase four acres of Blenheim Industrial Park for $80,000.

Director of Economic Development for the municipality Stuart McFadden says Voorwinden is planning to build a greenhouse, approximately 21,000-22,000 sq ft. In that building, they plan to set up a sales office, storage space and have things like repairs and maintenance done at the location.

"They'll probably have ten-15 people working inside of the building," says McFadden. "We also understand that there's an opportunity to grow in the future and just getting them here is a big win for us."

The company had been looking to expand from its temporary space in Essex when the municipality offered to show them properties in Chatham-Kent.

"Growing the greenhouse sector is strategic for us," says McFadden. "Getting these types of companies to help support the growth of that industry is very much aligned with what we're trying to accomplish."

Before the company can take full ownership there are some details that need to be ironed out.

"We've started the process to do a severance of the four acres and to create a reference plan for that four acres," says McFadden. "It's just internal things that need to be done in order to finalize the deal."

McFadden says their goal is to have everything ready for Voorwinden by December 1, 2016.
