In what started out as a bleak and dreary day, Mother Nature eventually smiled upon the attendees of this year's Remembrance Day ceremony in Chatham.
A steady drizzle accompanied the start of the assembly at Chatham's Cenotaph on Sixth St. However, just minutes after the crowd paused in a moment of silence, the clouds parted and the sun shined down on the gathering.
Among the crowd was Corporal David Lovell, a vehicle tech with the military. He was emotional as he posed for a picture by the cenotaph with his father.
"I've seen a lot of friends come and go, a lot of family members have been in the military and wars. It's a touching day" says Lovell.
More residents gathered for an indoor ceremony at the John D. Bradley Centre. Another veteran, Private Bob Grant, was inspired to be a Royal Canadian Electrical Engineer because of his cousin.
"He got the highest award that can be given, other than one from the queen. I was so proud to join the service myself, to be like him and serve my country," says Grant.
In both cases, a multitude of wreaths were set against the monuments, representing the different organizations within Chatham-Kent, and to remember the fallen.
A Former Legion Sergeant-At-Arms named Roy was brought to tears when talking about what the day means to him.
"I didn't think I'd be like this," Roy says through tears. "I've lost a lot of friends. I think the older you get, you feel the reaction more."
