Officers say they got the call at around 8pm Thursday in the area of Joseph St.
When police arrived at the scene, they arrested one person and checked the cab driver.
It's not clear how badly he was hurt, but investigators say his injuries were non-life threatening.
The man who police arrested has been charged with assault and was released with conditions and a future court date.
SPS Board Chair Kelly Ash said the decision followed discussions with Acting Chief Mike Federico and aligns with practices at other police services.
