Chatham-Kent's Top Stories Of 2016

Winter storms and serious crashes dominated the headlines on BlackburnNews.com in 2016.

Top Three

The most popular story of the year by far hit the website on Monday, February 22.

It warned of a winter storm that would bring rain, significant snow with the possibility of freezing rain in some areas of Chatham-Kent.

That storm also came on the heels of a record breaking weekend for the region.

On Saturday, February 20, Chatham’s high of 15 C (59 F) shattered a record high that was set in February 1994.

Coming in second this year is a story about a serious two-vehicle crash on Hwy. 40 back on August 19.

A minivan collided head-on with a Chatham-Kent EMS ambulance, sending three people to hospital.

The driver of the minivan later succumbed to his injuries while the two people who were in the ambulance were treated for their injuries and released.

And no surprise here, Chatham's downtown condo project is at the heart of one of the top three stories of 2016.

But this story is less about the ongoing construction than it is about three daring photographers.

On January 12, BlackburnNews.com posted a gallery of pictures that were taken by travelling photographer Dylan Johnson along with Kyle Wicks and his friend Matt Kett.

Those pictures proved to be somewhat controversial -- especially because Johnson, Wicks, and Kett were all trespassing at the time the photos were taken.

Chatham-Kent police warned the trio about their “risky and illegal behaviour," but ultimately, no charges were laid.
