Road Salt Problematic For Pets

As winter progresses, salt will get poured onto the roads and sidewalks, but what prevents people from slipping can actually irritate paws.

PAWR Operations Manager Myriam Armstrong says road salt can effect dogs and cats, whether it's ingested or stepped on.

But there are preventative measures that can be taken.

"We use pet-friendly salt in our parking lot because of all the ins and outs of all the dogs," she says.

Armstrong adds if the municipality switched the type of salt used it would benefit pets, but since pet-friendly salt is more expensive than regular salt, she admits that could be a bit of a challenge.
