Police: He Broke In While She Was Sleeping

A 33-year-old Chatham man is in trouble with the law after allegedly breaking into a residence and assaulting a woman who was inside.

Police say the man and the woman know each other and he was released from custody in November 2016 with a condition not to contact her.

Officers say he broke that condition when he allegedly forced his way into her residence at around 3pm Wednesday afternoon while she was sleeping and started rummaging through some of her belongings.

The woman told police she woke up while he was still inside the residence and when she asked him to leave, he allegedly assaulted her.

She called police and the man left before they could arrive, but officers found him a short distance away.

The woman was treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries.

The man was arrested and charged with break and enter, assault, and failing to comply with his bail conditions.
