School Closure Not A Big Deal For Some

Parents seem to be taking the possible closure of John N. Given Public School in Chatham in stride.

Only a handful attended a 30 minute meeting at Tecumseh Public School Thursday night where only four questions were asked.

The plan is to merge the elementary school with Tecumseh Public School and moving its Grade 7 and 8 French Immersion Program to McNaughton Avenue Public School.

Michelle Jones has a son who attends John N. Given and welcomes the move.

"Yeah, I'm for the change," she says. "Kids are resilient and I think this is a good change for them and for me and my child the sooner it can get done the better."

Trustees make a final decision May 9.

If approved, John N. Given could close as soon as June.

Jones is confident the move would provide a better environment for her son, saying "just more opportunities for different things and programs.  Some people like a smaller school but for my son I think he would like to get to know other kids."

Jones says crossing McNaughton Ave. safely won't be a problem for her son.
