Chatham's director of engineering and transportation tells BlackburnNews.com that drivers shouldn't be concerned about rust and road stains.
Adam Sullo says the rust is normal and the span is structurally sound.
"Water sprays up on the girders because they're exposed above the deck of the bridge and what it does is leave grit or dirt on the bridge," says Sullo. "The road grit looks like it's rust."
The bridge was closed last summer for reconstruction.
Sullo says the bridge should last another 20 to 25 years.
He says several small areas on the girders also need re-coating.
"The other part of the rust happening is actually water getting into those joints and a bleed of rust coming out of it," he says.
Sullo says it's not unusual for rust to quickly appear on bridges, especially on joints.
