Employers Cautiously Optimistic About Hiring This Quarter

According to the Manpower Outlook Survey for the second quarter of 2017, your best prospect at landing a job is in public administration at a large employer.

In Canada, 1,900 micro, small, medium and large employers were interviewed about their hiring prospects between April and June. Of those, 13% expected to hire in the second quarter, while 3% planned to cut back and 82% suggested they had no plans to hire or layoff workers. The rest, 2%, were unsure.

That's unchanged from a year ago but is down 3% from the first quarter of 2017.

Ontario and Western Canada had the most encouraging hiring climates in Canada.

Ontario employers indicated a moderate hiring environment with the strongest gains in public administration and manufacturing - durables.

Of the large companies surveyed, 21% had plans to add to staffing levels, an increase of 5% from the same period last year.

Internationally, Manpower surveyed 58,000 employers in 43 countries.
