The Chatham-Kent Public Library is getting ready to grow its seed library.
The program, which debuted last year at the Chatham branch, is expanding to the libraries in Ridgetown, Tilbury, and Wallaceburg.
"We are lending out seeds for the patrons, or residents of the community of Chatham-Kent to come and borrow and grow in their garden," says Cassey Beauvais, manager of public services for the Chatham-Kent Public Library. "Basically you can come borrow vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers so you can either create a beautiful space, or grow your own food in your backyard."
Beauvais says the pilot program was very successful.
We did check out over 400 packages of seeds, so that to us, it shows that people are interested in this and we decided to grow it a little bit more," says Beauvais. "If it's successful again this year, we'll grow it even further, to hopefully, maybe our 11 branches."
Tilbury's seed library is open now, while the rest launch on the first day of spring , March 20. Residents can get one package of seeds per variety.
The library will be looking for seed donations from local gardeners later this year.
