The deputy mayor of Brooke-Alvinston and former longtime chief of the Alvinston Fire Department has died in a single-vehicle crash.
Jim Hayter was 70.
Middlesex OPP say a van travelling west on Glendon Dr. crossed over the centre line and hit the ditch between Mayfair Rd. and Springfield Rd. at 4:40pm Thursday.
The vehicle sustained some damage and Hayter, the lone occupant, was found unresponsive with no vital signs.
Hayter was also a principal in The Hayter Group.
His wife, Mary Louise, died suddenly on March 2 at the age of 65.
Brooke-Alvinston Mayor Don McGugan says Hayter was heavily involved in the community.
"Very generous, willing giver, very kind, very thoughtful and on council he was always concerned that we stretch the tax-dollars as far as we can and he always wanted to help those that were struggling," says McGugan.
Funeral arrangements have been announced for Jim Hayter. Visitation will take place at the Van Heck Funeral home on River St. in Alvinston on Monday from 7:30pm to 9pm and Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11am at the Brooke-Alvinston-Inwood Community Centre in Alvinston.
Interment to follow at St. Matthews Cemetery.
