A North Carolina man is being held in Detroit on murder charges after being arrested at the Ambassador Bridge.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspected a vehicle returning to the United States from Canada around 4am Friday, CBP said in a news release. The vehicle contained a man and a woman and had North Carolina licence plates.
The couple, both U.S. citizens, explained they had gone to Canada unintentionally and were refused entry because the male passenger did not have identification or documents. The vehicle was sent for secondary inspection and the couple had their fingerprints checked.
The check revealed that the passenger, identified as Jerome Jones, had a warrant out for a first-degree murder charge in Cumberland County, NC. Jones was taken into custody and is being held at the Wayne County Jail in Detroit.
"CBP officers went the extra mile to identify the subject of a murder warrant," said port director Roderick Blanchard in the news release. "Our vigilance and attention to detail helps keep our communities safe."
Jones is awaiting extradition.
