Celebrating Grandparents (GALLERY)

It's not everyday that students get to bring their grandparents to school. But on "Grandparents Day" it's a given.

Students from kindergarten to Grade 4 at Christ The King Catholic School in Wallaceburg spent most of their day showing appreciation for the several grandparents who made it out for a mini-concert and picnic.

School principal Renée Culverwell says the school started celebrating its own "Grandparents Day" last year, but on a smaller scale. This year, Culverwell says they wanted to make it bigger with more activities. The celebration comes as an event held for Catholic Education Week.

"The theme is walking forward together with God," she says. "We're always walking forward with [grandparents] so we wanted to have something special for them today."

During lunch, a few proud grandparents spoke with BlackburnNews.com, saying they're happy the school chose to include them into their celebrations this week.

"It lets us experience more of what they're doing at school -- we don't actually get that opportunity that much," says Nancy Mahoney, grandmother to six of the children present.

"It's wonderful," says Jill VanZelst, grandmother to two of the students. "It is really great, and I feel sorry for the grandparents who couldn't make it -- who have to work."

Schools with the St. Clair Catholic District School Board will each host separate events throughout the week, each following the same theme of "walking forward together."
