Water wells activists in Dover Centre are continuing their fight for clean water.
Water Wells First spokesperson Kevin Jakubec says there have been several reports of black, contaminated water since wind turbines were installed in Dover.
The outspoken activist says his own tests show Kettle Point Black Shale in the water, a toxic material containing heavy metals like Uranium.
Jakubec claims there has been no official testing yet from the Ministry of Environment to make sure the water is safe.
"It's a very serious contamination and we're hoping that the Ministry of Environment now that they've invited Water Wells First down to their Windsor offices to have a meeting with them [we hope] the ministry will test and confirm our results," says the activist.
Jakubec also continues to argue that clean water is a right that no one should have to fight for.
"Everyone says this is rural population problem, it's not... it's a human problem," he explains.
Jakubec says he's worried about several new turbines moving to Chatham-Kent and potentially further spreading the toxic water problem.
"It won't look good if we do start having Kettle Point Black Shale particles in our water... how will we get our money out [and] was it an ethical investment?" he asks.
Despite Jakubec's concerns, officials with the North Kent Wind project have repeatedly stated that “groundwater impacts are not anticipated” adding that “North Kent Wind has been advised by scientific experts it retained during the application for the Renewable Energy Approval and the subsequent appeal that there are no reasons to believe that vibrations will influence groundwater.”
The activist group is looking to stop the construction of the North Kent Wind project so tests can be done on local water wells before the turbines are up and operational.
