A plan to outsource 300 trucking jobs at Chrysler has been stopped, at least for now.
Members of the Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) transportation unit gathered at the Caboto Club on Sunday to hear from the leadership of Unifor Local 444. Union board members told the audience that the letter of intent to outsource those jobs at the Windsor Assembly Plant has been rescinded.
"The goal was to get the company to rescind the letter of intent to outsource and we have accomplished that,” says Dino Chiodo, Local 444 president on the local's Facebook page.
Instead, FCA is giving the union some time to suggest ideas to cut costs and keep the division going, so a committee will be formed to discuss cost-cutting suggestions. The informational meeting with the transportation unit was closed to the general public and the media.
The transportation unit at Windsor Assembly consists of drivers, skilled-trades workers, clerks and their immediate management.
This past spring, the automaker had put out a request to the business community, seeking companies who were willing to take on portions of the transportation division. FCA and Unifor had already agreed on a new contract in fall 2016.
