Deadline Close for "Operation Backpack"

There's still time to register for a free backpack full of school supplies from the United Way.

The deadline to apply is Friday, August 18, and the backpacks will be handed out on August 30 and 31.

"For the last two years we've anticipated 1,400," says Good Neighbours Coordinator Mary Symons. "Last year was 1,352. Currently we are at 1,126 requests."

Donations of school supplies and backpacks are always accepted, but cash donations can go the extra mile thanks to a partnership with local businesses.

"We are able to get phenomenal pricing," says Symons. "In some instances, get two items for the price of what might be purchased."

Symons adds volunteers are needed from August 27 to the 31.

"Everything from unloading supplies on the 27th, to organizing the supplies on the 28th, to distributing backpacks at the main office."
