CK Council Approves Plan For New Seniors' Residence

A new seniors' residence in Chatham-Kent is one step closer to becoming a reality.

Chatham-Kent council unanimously passed a motion 16-0 on Monday to approve a zoning change at the corner of Bloomfield Rd. and Richmond St.  The change will allow for a proposed dwelling for senior citizens, by converting one of two hotels at that location.

In the motion proposal, it was suggested that Travelodge be converted into the seniors' residence, while Comfort Inn would remain a hotel. However, a decision has not been finalized as to which building will be taken over.

The proposed dwelling is planned to have 103 units, varying in size. The building would also have several communal rooms for dining, games, conferences, and other activities.

A planning official estimates that the new seniors' residence will be operational by September 2018.
