New Powerhouse For Union Gas Office

Don't be surprised if you see some construction starting up this month at the Union Gas office on Keil Dr. in Chatham.

It's the start of a two-year project to complete a new powerhouse there. That powerhouse is supposed to "ensure business continuity and mitigate future flooding risk," according to a release from Union Gas.

The powerhouse is going up on the Grand Ave. W. side of the office with construction expected to wrap up in 2019.

The new building will also give passersby a glimpse into its inner workings -- the new equipment will be visible through a glass viewing gallery.

Union Gas officials say the powerhouse will employ "new energy-efficient natural gas technologies and equipment" and will feature a "green roof."

Traffic around the building could be affected by construction crews, but no permanent road closures are expected at this time.

In order to reduce the impact that the noise may have on neighbouring residents and businesses, the construction will also be limited to standard business hours of 7am to 5pm.
