First Charges Filed In Connection To Russian Meddling In US Election

The first charges stemming from an investigation into possible collusion with Russia during the 2016 US presidential election, have been filed.

According to CNN, a federal grand jury in Washington, DC approved the charges in the investigation, which is led by special counsel Robert Mueller. The charges are currently sealed under orders from a federal judge, however, it is believed that the person or persons charged could be taken into custody as soon as Monday.

It is unknown at this time who will be charged, and a spokesman for the special counsel's office declined CNN's request to comment.

Around 11 hours before CNN broke the news that the charges had been filed, Trump issued a tweet stating, "It is now commonly agreed, after many months of COSTLY looking, that there was NO collusion between Russia and Trump. Was collusion with HC [Hillary Clinton]!"

Mueller was appointed back in May, by the US deputy attorney general to lead the investigation into Russian meddling.  The investigation has been given authorization to investigate "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation."

The investigation has focused on possible collusion between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and the Russian government.  Mueller is also investigating whether or not Trump committed obstruction of justice, by possibly attempting to impede the investigation.

The investigation team has also examined foreign lobbying conducted by former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, as well as others who have have connections to President Trump.
