Flooding Prevention Plan Underway For Erie Beach Area

Chatham-Kent is working on a strategy to prevent future damage and disruption to residents along Lake Erie after this week's flooding.

However, Tim Dick, the municipalities director of drainage, says it may take a while because the issue of shoreline ownership is very complicated.

Blackburn News has learned that an agreement signed in the 1970s doesn't completely spell out who is responsible for certain parts of the shoreline along the Erie Beach area.

Meanwhile, municipal officials say residents should leave flooded areas when flooding occurs, shutoff all utilities and avoid flood water.  They should also address pets’ needs, contact their insurance agent, stay informed and lock their home when leaving.

If leaving is not an option, the municipality wants you to stay safe and call 911 if you need help.  Other helpful tips include having an evacuation plan and preparing a 72-hour kit and “go-bag”.
