A Canadian first started in Windsor-Essex a short time ago is expanding to Sarnia-Lambton and Chatham-Kent.
The Compassion Care Community program that offers health and social support for lonely and isolated people, is rapidly growing in the Windsor area, and talks are underway with partners to expand eastwards by the end of 2018.
Program Director Deborah Sattler says the need for human services is rising because sons and daughters are moving away to big centres, like Toronto and Calgary.
"Neighbours helping neighbours, that operate in physical environments, where you talk to each other because you live close by. It also can operate in virtual environments, where it's easy to make those connections with neighbours and companions, and do things that you enjoy doing," says Sattler.
The Erie-St. Clair Local Health Integration Network is considering a funding request of $100,000 over the next four years to support the program.
Sattler says fewer people are getting married and having children, and it's becoming a big issue in their twilight years.
"Bring people who offer wellness programs, day programs, activity programs, municipal programs together so we have all of that information organized in one spot so it's easy to navigate and identify," Sattler says.
She says the program is always looking for new partners to fill the gaps, whether you're an individual or a corporation, like a college or a university.
"We have a big vision, and unlimited room for people who are interested in spreading the movement to step in and help us grow," says Sattler.
