Flood Watch in Effect for Lake Erie Shore

High winds in the forecast are prompting a flood watch to be issued.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for Sunday afternoon and evening.

Environment Canada's marine forecast has also issued a strong wind warning for western Lake Erie with high winds expected into the beginning of next week. The forecast is calling for sustained winds over 35 km/hr for Sunday afternoon and evening with possible gusts of up to 65 km/hr. Waves could reach 1.5m in height by Sunday evening.

Wave action may cause erosion and damage to the shoreline in Chatham-Kent and Elgin County. Localized flooding may be possible in vulnerable areas due to waves crashing against shoreline protection and water spraying onto land. These conditions are similar to those experienced in flooding along Erie Shore Dr earlier this year.

The LTVCA says residents along the shoreline should be prepared. Travel along the shoreline should be avoided unless necessary. Waves could be strong and pavement could be slippery, and there could be dangerous debris in the water. Standing water can also be dangerous.

This watch is due to expire on Monday, but forecasts show high winds are possible Tuesday as well.
