Ice And Snow Shut Down Sombra Ferry

The combination of this week's snow, cold and strong north winds have created problems on the lower St Clair River. The Sombra Ferry has suspended operations until conditions improve.

Owner Morgan Dalgety says ice jammed at Fawn Island and they were forced to dock Tuesday night.

"Even being down for one day is too long," says Dalgety. "We'd like to keep everybody going back and forth across the river and a lot of people depend on us including workers and people who are day tripping. But, you lose one day and it's right into your pocketbook the very first day."

Dalgety says on average the ferry makes about 35 daily trips across the St. Clair River between Sombra and Marine City, Michigan.

The Walpole Island Ferry between Walpole Island and Algonac, Michigan is also docked due to ice conditions.
