Man Lost On Lake St. Clair Ice Lucky To Be Alive

A Canadian man has been rescued from the ice on Mitchell's Bay.

The U.S. Coast Guard in Detroit says he was fished out of Lake St. Clair on Thursday around 6pm. Officials say they got his position via cell phone ping and the OPP, Chatham-Kent police, and the Chatham-Kent Fire Department responded by land.

The man was found roughly 2.5 km from shore in poor visibility with fog down to the surface. Rescuers say they were only able to see him using night vision goggles and could barely see the light from his cell phone.

They say he was hypothermic because he was out on the ice since around 6am.

He said the fog prevented him from seeing the shore and he got lost.

The man was taken to the hospital in the U.S. and returned to Canada.

His name is not being released.
