Those that ventured out onto the roads Wednesday morning had a treacherous commute no matter where they drove across Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.
The snow started to fall just before the morning commute got underway Wednesday, and Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Windsor-Essex, Leamington, and Chatham-Kent calling for heavy snow. Amounts are expected to total close to 5cm before the snow starts to taper off around 10am.
School buses were running in the city and the county, but even those vehicles were not immune.
Callers to BlackburnNews.com reported accidents involving school buses in the county, and Ontario Provincial Police Constable Jim Root confirmed that two buses slid off the road into the ditch.
The first, on Walker Sideroad near Concession Rd. 14 had students onboard at the time, although no one was hurt. Paramedics attended the scene as a precaution.
The second bus slid off Hwy. 3 near Division Rd. in Kingsville after it was struck by another vehicle, but Root says it was empty, and there were no injuries.
In all, Windsor police say they responded to eight accidents, while the OPP were called out to more than 20. One driver said it took him 45 minutes to travel on Hwy. 3 from Division Rd. to Arner Townline.
In the city, accidents were reported on the roundabout at Hwy. 401 and Howard Ave., County Rd. 46 and Concession 9, Ouellette and Riverside Dr., and on Jefferson Ave. at South National Rd.
Meanwhile, emergency responders are reporting a number of calls. They're reminding drivers to move over when EMS vehicles are seen approaching.
Environment Canada warns drivers to "exercise caution and allow extra time to reach their destination."
