Police Respond To Three Suicide Attempts In The Same Hour

Elgin County OPP are raising awareness about support systems for those experiencing mental health concerns, after officers were called to three separate suicide attempts within just one hour.

Police say on Tuesday, the first call came in at around 10:20pm for a male who had intentionally overdosed on sleeping pills in the Municipality of Bayham.

Shortly after at around 10:50pm, officers responded to Central Elgin after a female attempted suicide by overdosing on anti-depressant medications.

And then at around 11pm, officers were called about a male in Central Elgin who wanted to kill himself by using his vehicle. Officers located the man and were able to approach the vehicle without being seen, and pull the male out of the vehicle while it was running. He was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act and was admitted to hospital without injury.

The OPP are asking anyone in need to call Reach Out, a 24-hour a day, seven-day a week phone service for those experiencing mental health concerns.  Reach Out can be contacted by calling 519-433-2023 or toll-free at 1-866-933-2023.
