Burst Pipe Blamed For Flooding at Wheatley Retirement Community

Residents at a local retirement community got a little wet Saturday morning.

Officials with the Chatham-Kent Fire Department say they received a call shortly before 10am, concerning flooding conditions at the Meadows of Wheatley complex on Pier Rd.

Assistant Chief Philip Thorburn says firefighters from the Wheatley station were dispatched to help on-site staff with an evacuation.

It was determined that a burst water pipe was the culprit. The pipe was isolated to prevent further flooding. Crews then assisted the staff with removing the bulk of the water.

No injuries were reported and residents were soon allowed to return to their rooms, according to Thorburn. Flood damage is estimated at $20,000.
