Early Morning Water Rescue Update

Chatham-Kent OPP say one person is still in the hospital after a near-drowning incident near Walpole Island.

Officers say a group of friends was boating on the Escarte Channel of Lake St. Clair at around 12am Thursday when one of them fell into the water.

Police say the victim was pulled from the water shortly after that and brought to the shore, but the group spent the night on an island before contacting emergency crews.

OPP say first responders were able to locate the missing boaters shortly after getting a call about the incident at 6:30am Thursday and rushed the victim to the hospital in serious condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
