Portions of the Lake Erie shoreline may become waterlogged Sunday night into Monday.
The Essex Regional Conservation Authority (ERCA) has issued a flood warning for the eastern shoreline of Leamington, along with the north and east shores of Pelee Island.
ERCA watershed management services director Tim Byrne said due to forecasted winds out of the east and northeast with sustained speeds of 25 to 40 kilometres per hour and with gusts up to 55 kilometres per hour, flooding is occurring on the east shoreline of the municipality of Leamington. In addition, damaging waves, splash and wave overtopping is occurring within this area and Pelee Island.
A flood watch remains in effect for Essex, Kingsville and Amherstburg along the Lake Erie shoreline, along with the Lake St. Clair shoreline of the towns of Lakeshore and Tecumseh, plus the eastern reaches of the city of Windsor. Areas along the Detroit River are not part of the watch area at this time. This watch now remains in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Byrne said that in the watch area, the potential for flooding exists resulting from wave overtopping, spray and standing water. This could damage breakwalls that are in poor condition or not maintained properly. There is the possibility for significant erosion of near-shore areas and the toe protection for existing breakwalls.
