Strong wind gusts expected to generate powerful waves

Windy conditions have prompted the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) to issue a safety bulletin for the Lake Erie Shoreline and Erie Shore Drive.

Environment Canada’s Marine Forecast has issued a strong wind warning for western Lake Erie. Wind gusts are expected to exceed 60 kilometres per hour Friday afternoon. In a media release issued Thursday, the LTVCA said waves could also reach a height of two metres on Friday.

Strong waves are expected to hit the shoreline in Chatham-Kent and Elgin County. Officials with the LTVCA said there is potential for localized flooding.

Residents are being reminded to avoid the shoreline during rough conditions.

The safety bulletin will be in effect until September 22.
