Man accused of assault and threats has pretrial date set

A Chatham man accused of assault and uttering death threats will have an in-chambers pretrial late next month and appear in court early November.

Due to a publication ban, the accused cannot be identified. He didn't appear in court Wednesday morning for the setting of the pretrial date, but his lawyer was there to handle his matters.

The man was charged by the Chatham-Kent Police Service on June 13. The offences allegedly took place over a period of time from October 1, 2001 to November 30, 2001, and February 18, 2018 to June 10, 2018.

The Crown prosecutor said she needed time to review the disclosure and the judge decided to set the pretrial date for October 30 and a follow-up, which he will be present for, on November 6. Both proceedings will be at the Ontario Court of Justice in Chatham.

The man was granted bail earlier this month for $20,000 split between two sureties.

He is facing a total of 20 charges; ten counts of verbally uttering death threats to four people, seven counts of assault against two people, assault causing bodily harm, and two counts of assault with a weapon. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
