Woman hit with knife during domestic assault

A Chatham man was arrested after allegedly striking his girlfriend with multiple objects including a knife.

Chatham-Kent police said they responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in Chatham Wednesday.

According to officers, a verbal argument escalated into an assault. Police said the man allegedly hit his common-law girlfriend with various items within the home and struck her with a small knife. The woman was taken to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the man fled prior to police arrival, but was located a short time later.

The 32-year-old Chatham man was charged with four counts of assault with a weapon. He was also arrested on outstanding warrants for theft, possession of property obtained by crime, failing to attend court, assault, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement and breach of probation.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
