UPDATE: Two people hurt in multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401

A multi-vehicle crash involving two tractor trailers on Highway 401 west of London has sent two people to hospital.

Emergency crews were called to the westbound lanes of the highway east of Mill Road, in Southwold Township at 1:30 p.m. Thursday after a transport truck rear-ended another big rig in a construction zone. The force of the collision sent the second tractor trailer forward into three other vehicles.

Two people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Elgin OPP briefly closed the 401 in both directions between Colonel Talbot Road and Union Road following the crash. The eastbound lanes were re-opened shortly after. The westbound lanes remained closed for several hours but were reopened around 5 p.m.

Charges are expected to be laid, police said.
