Chatham man wins $50K in Ontario 49 draw

A 53-year-old Chatham trucker appears to have luck on his side when it comes to playing the lottery.

The OLG announced that John Cotey has won $50,000 in the Ontario 49 draw for October 20. This is the second time Cotey has won a major lottery prize.

“I won part of a Lotto 6/49 $2-million jackpot with my lottery group at work years ago,” said the father of three in a statement.

The idea of cashing in on a winning ticket came as a pleasant surprise.

“Even though I knew I had won, I checked my ticket again against a copy of the winning numbers,” he said. “I still didn’t believe it – and scanned it three more times!”

Cotey said he plans to put a down payment on a house and invest the rest of his winnings in an RRSP.

The winning ticket was bought at Petro-Canada on Grand Avenue West in Chatham. Ontario 49 is $1 per play, with a draw held every Wednesday and Saturday.
